Gayle Berry dan Nicholas Snowdon, analis Barclays Capital, mengatakan dalam laporannya bahwa impor bauksit melonjak ke rekor 5,3 juta ton pada Maret, 50% lebih dari tahun sebelumnya, mengutip data perdagangan dari bea cukai di Beijing. Data juga menunjukkan impor bijih nikel melompat 73% menjadi 3,67 juta ton.
Indonesia, pemasok bijih nikel dan bauksit terbesar ke China, akan melarang ekspor bijih yang belum diproses termasuk tembaga, bijih besi, emas dan mangan mulai 6 Mei, serta membebaskan produsen yang berniat untuk meningkatkan pasokan lokal.
"Kondisi peraturan yang tidak pasti saat ini membuat pelaku pasar, dan penyuling alumina khususnya, gelisah soal pasokan di masa depan," jelas Berry & Snowdon.
Mereka mengatakan China terlihat membangun stok bauksit yang dapat mengurangi kebutuhan impor yang pada tahun mendatang bergantung pada hasil keputusan ekspor Indonesia.
Data kepabean China menunjukkann pada Maret Indonesia mengirim 4,4 juta ton bauksit ke China, terbesar paling tidak sejak Februari 2008, dan 2,9 juta ton bijih nikel, tertinggi sejak November.
Para analis mengatakan untuk bijih nikel, Indonesia adalah yang bertanggung jawab untuk sebagian besar peningkatan tersebut.
